Rebellion Acquire Colin MacNeil’s Iconic ‘Judge Dredd: America’ Cover Artwork
29th September 2023
Rebellion are delighted to announce that the original art of Colin MacNeil’s iconic cover for the legendary 1990-1991 storyline, Judge Dredd: America, has been acquired for its archive.
Originally published in the new Judge Dredd Megazine between 1990 and 1991, America heralded a new phase of Judge Dredd. During the 1980s, John Wagner and Alan Grant had already explored the fascistic authoritarianism of Dredd’s world in stories about political oppression and pro-democracy terrorism.
In America, Wagner overtly took the viewpoint of ordinary citizens living under this despotic system, showing their struggle with pathos and subtlety that took the storytelling in Judge Dredd to a whole new level of maturity and complexity. Colin MacNeil’s painted artwork confirmed Judge Dredd‘s place as one of the most politically charged and nuanced series in comics.
Speaking on the news, Colin said:
“I’m pleased this iconic piece of artwork has found a new home in Rebellion’s archive and hope it will be be seen and enjoyed by many fans of Judge Dredd at exhibitions and conventions across the galaxy.”
The acquisition is another step in our ongoing mission to preserve British comics history, and Colin’s cover art will now be held safely in the 2000 AD archive for posterity.
