The 2000 AD ABC: Bad City Blue

Built into an asteroid and floating in space, Bader City is a crumbling, decaying ghetto controlled by armed gangs. The only kind of order is kept by guys like Blue, a trouble-shooting ‘button man’ who enforces order at the behest of the top-siders.

He thinks he’s saving the city for ‘decent folk’- but unfortunately for him, it looks like the elite he serves is not as benevolent as he once thought. Created by writer Alan Grant and artist Robin Smith, Bad City Blue is a bleak highlight from the mid 1980s, full of class warfare, gritty sci-fi, and big concepts.

The 2000 AD ABC: B.L.A.I.R.1

Following New Labour’s victory in the UK general election, the pages of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic were lit up by the first Prime Minister to be successfully activated by Bio-Enhancement Link-Up via Artificial Intelligence Relays. – he was B.L.A.I.R.1!

Riffing off M.A.C.H.1, one of 2000 AD’s first stories, and aided by the artificial intelligence implanted in his brain called Doctor Spin, B.L.A.I.R.1 was overtly political, totally over-the-top, and very silly.

But was the strip a landslide win or a candidate for deselection?

The 2000 AD ABC: Armageddon

The world stands on the brink of nuclear war and, as tensions between the superpowers boil over, a woman called Lori LeMayne is being hunted by a ruthless and mysterious killer – the Bad Man. This is Armageddon!

Scripted by Alan Grant and illustrated by Carlos Ezquerra, Armageddon: The Bad Man ran in the then-fortnightly Judge Dredd Megazine in 1992 and was intended as the opening chapter in the origin story of Judge Dredd’s world, years before John Wagner and Ezquerra embarked on the Origins epic.

It remains a fascinating, and oft-forgotten, early attempt to marry contemporary politics with the rise of the Judges!
