OUT NOW: Judge Dredd Megazine #471

Judge Dredd Megazine #471 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #471 is OUT NOW!

Those of you born in the seventies and grew up in the eightiest are just the right age to appreciate the Scarred For Life books, which celebrate (and perhaps question too) the weirdness of popculture during these decades, from public-information films to children’s TV, sweets to urban legends.

The first two self-published doorstop tomes have just been joined by a third volume, which examines life under the shadow of the Bomb, and naturally focuses a chapter on The Apocalypse War, which was originally published when nuclear fear was at its height. In this issue, Scott Montgomery chats to the SFL authors about how formative 2000 AD was for an audience terrified by Threads and When the Wind Blows.

Elsewhere, there’s chats with artists Mark Farmer, Paul McCaffrey and Gemma Sheldrake, a look at the return of 2000 AD fanzine Zarjaz, plus a whole bunch of stories wrap up as Dredd, Harrower Squad, Dreadnoughts and Armitage all reach their final episodes. It clears the decks for next month’s crossover event Nordland Rising, in which the Norts from the Rogue Trooper universe wage war on the worlds of 2000 AD!

Judge Dredd Megazine #471 is out now from all good newsagents and comic book stores, plus digitally from our webshop and apps! Don’t forget that if you buy an issue of the Megazine in the first month of its release then postage in the UK is free!

We’re well into the holiday season, so that can only mean it’s time for Summer Specials to accompany you on your travels. By now I hope you’ve all picked up the alt-universe 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special, and hitting the shelves right now is the 2024 Misty special, which sees US comics writer Gail Simone craft a trio of chilling tales with artists such as Aly Fell and Carola Borelli. You can take a peak into the creation of this spooktacular issue elsewhere in this typically packed Meg.

We’ve also got chats with some of the writers and artists behind the new Regened strips, such as Ned Hartley and Mike Walters, and a sneaky peek at the new strips that will be appearing under the all-ages banner. Elsewhere, there’s a new Dredd thriller courtesy of Ian Edginton and US artist Kevin West, making his debut for the House of Tharg, and another complete Mega-City 2099 tale from Ken Niemand and Tom Foster, joining Armitage, Dreadnoughts and Harrower Squad.

Be here in thirty for the conclusion to all these stories as we wrap up the current roster in time for a special crossover event coming your way in September – the multiversethreatening Nordland Rising!

Judge Dredd Megazine #468 is OUT NOW!

We head back to the early days of the Justice Department as Dreadnoughts returns this issue for the start of a short series, Nothing to Fear, courtesy as ever of Mike Carroll and John Higgins.

There’s also a new case for Harrower Squad, a complete comical Dredd thriller from Ian Edginton and D’Israeli, the finale to DeMarco, P.I.: No Smoke, and the latest instalment of Armitage. Hookjaw also wraps up this month – and a new IDW Dredd mini-series commences, Toxic by Paul Jenkins and Marco Castiello – and from next issue we’ll be replacing one of the reprint slots with a pair of brand-new stories. What they’ll be, you’ll have to wait and see, but it’ll mean yet more original content in the Meg for no extra cost!

Elsewhere, Karl Stock chats with a further bunch of creators who’ve dropped out of 2000 AD for one reason or another in the fifth chapter of the Where Are They Now? series, as well as up-and-coming artist Laura Helsby and RM Guéra and Giulia Brusco, the art-bot duo behind the Rob Williams-scripted Dredd that’s just finished in the prog, Rend & Tear With Tooth & Claw. As always, a meaty package to get your own teeth into, creeps!

Judge Dredd Megazine #467 is OUT NOW!

One of the Megazine’s long-standing creations returns this issue – Brit-City Detective Judge Armitage is back, courtesy of Liam Johnson and Warren Pleece, in Bullets For an Old Man.

Armitage, who’s been a cranky old geezer since he first appeared back in June 1991, is now a consultant to Brit-Cit’s CID division, but Justice Department is keen to mine his experience and memories – not least CID chief, and Armitage’s former partner, Treasure Steel.

Elsewhere, there’s a complete Dredd thriller from Mike Carroll and Paul Marshall, a one-off Devlin Waugh story by Aleš Kot and PJ Holden, the last part of this arc of Harrower Squad, and the penultimate episode of DeMarco, P.I.

Karl Stock chats to former 2000 AD PR droid Igor Goldkind and Scream! editor Ian Rimmer – ahead of the release this year of the frankly glorious fortieth anniversary Archival Collection, which collects up all fifteen issues of the fondly remembered horror anthology – and Stephen Jewell gets the info on Chris Weston, Paul Cornell and Rachael Smith’s new crowdfunded books. Judge Dredd Megazine #466 is OUT NOW!

This issue we pay tribute to two more influential comics creators that we’ve sadly lost in the last month – both Paul Neary and Enrique Badia Romero were only occasional contributors to the House of Tharg, but they were formidable figures in the history of UK funnybooks. Romero was a familiar presence in newspapers, drawing the Modesty Blaise and AXA strips, while Paul had a pivotal role at Marvel UK, overseeing a publishing house that was in the mid-eighties rivalling 2000 AD in its output with titles such as Death’s Head and Dragon’s Claws as well as nurturing future artistic stars like Liam Sharp and Doug Braithwaite.

Alongside Neary’s obituary, we also have a chapter from Karl Stock’s Comic Book Punks that covers the Marvel UK era but was cut from the book for reasons of length. It conveys a period of enormous creativity that’s generally looked upon very fondly by those that were there.

Elsewhere, there’s more blistering action in Dredd, Devlin Waugh, Harrower Squad and DeMarco, P.I. plus a complete Tale From the Black Museum from Liam Johnson and Cam Smith. Enjoy, creeps!

Judge Dredd Megazine #465 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #465 is OUT NOW!

There’s a pair of tributes this issue to the two artistic greats that we lost at the end of last year – Ian Gibson and John Burns – as creators pay their respect to these formidable talents, who contributed so much to both 2000 AD and the Meg. There’s also an obituary for influential alternative comedian Tony Allen, whose connection to the Meg wasn’t quite as sustained but nevertheless he was there right from the beginning, writing the satirical Mega-City News columns that ran in the first few issues alongside America and Young Death.

OUT NOW: Judge Dredd Megazine #464

Judge Dredd Megazine #464 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #464 is OUT NOW!

By now I imagine most of you will have heard the news of the sad passing of artist Ian Gibson, which ended 2023 on a melancholy note. Of course, justly beloved amongst Squaxx for his work on Robo-Hunter and Halo Jones, we shouldn’t forget his past contributions to the Meg, most significantly the glorious Return of the Taxidermist, the ten-parter scripted by John Wagner that featured some beautiful colour Gibson artwork. We’ll publish a tribute piece to Ian next issue, but for the moment let me just take the opportunity to say how much he’ll be missed.

Inside this month’s Megazine, we’ve got the last parts of Spector and the current DeMarco, P.I. arc, but also no less than five new stories – Dredd tackles a rampaging creature in Ravenous by Mike Carroll and Anthony Williams, there’s a complete Tale From the Black Museum by David Barnett and Lee Milmore, Harrower Squad makes its debut courtesy of David Baillie and Steve Yeowell, and Si Spurrier and Conor Boyle’s Hook-Jaw and Mark Russell and Max Dunbar’s Under Siege both commence their runs. Enjoy, citizens!
