It’s hard to overstate John’s impact on the industry as co-creator of Judge Dredd, Strontium Dog, Button Man, and so much more. In this three hour interview, John discusses his life and career, from the beginnings of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, his writing partnership with Alan Grant, why he thinks he’s never made it in American comics, and his thoughts about the future of his greatest creation. It’s a feast for the ears, though with some hefty background noise from the pub!

Dan Abnett and Mark Harrison’s sci-fi odyssey series, The Out, has become something of a sleeper hit in the pages of 2000 AD. At the furthest edge of the universe, Cyd Finlea is photo-journalist working for the publishers Global Neographic, travelling deep into outer space — otherwise known as THE OUT — and cataloguing the alien societies that she encounters. She left Earth ten years ago and has lost track of how far she is from home, but regardless she keeps going. Dan and Mark discuss the series’ serendipitous creation, the influence of 1970s and ’80s sci-fi book covers, and how Cyd’s journey through The Out tells us something out the here and now.

Before 2000 AD there was Action. Before Action, there was Battle Picture Weekly – created by Pat Mills and John Wagner, the war-themed weekly was the first shoots of what would come to become a comics revolution. On this episode of the Lockdown Tapes we talk to Dave Hunt, who took over as editor of Battle after its launch. From his own childhood amidst the ruins of war in the East End of London to working with artistic greats such as Carlos Ezquerra, Joe Colquhoun and Mike Western, from the fallout after the ‘banning’ of Action to the relaunch of the legendary Eagle in the 1980s, Dave was at the helm for a vital period of British comics and, despite the challenges the medium faced, had a key role in producing some of the industry’s most influential titles.
