From comics created with childhood friends in his bedroom to his acclaimed noir crime comics with Ed Brubaker, comics have been a fundamental part of Sean Phillips’ life. A teenager when he began working for British girls’ comics, he moved onto ‘mature’ title Crisis and then onto 2000 AD before becoming one of the key artists in the early years of the Vertigo imprint and then working on the smash hit, Marvel Zombies. Since then, he has forged a winning partnership with Brubaker on creator-owned titles such as Criminal and Fatale. In this episode of the Thrill-Cast, Sean chats about his singular journey from the pages of Jinty and Tammy, to the hard-boiled streets of the American nightmare.

From Judge Dredd stories such as Muzak Killer and The Juve Mutated Kung Fu Kleggs to a long stint on Sláine, as well as work on Marvel UK’s Digitek and Wizard of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering card game, Power’s fully-painted work was inspired by 2000 AD artists such as Brian Bolland, Simon Bisley and Glenn Fabry. But a chance recommendation in 1997 saw him move from comics to working on a career in character and production design for TV and film, including films such as on Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, the Harry Potter franchise, Batman Begins, Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate factory, V for Vendetta, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Fantastic Beasts. The Thrill-Cast chats to Power about his career, how to pronounce Tír na nÓg, how lessons he learnt in comics have impacted his work in movies, and how painting onto black paper seemed like a good idea at the time.

On this episode, we continue our chats with creators about their new stories with this legendary characters, beginning with author Suyi Davies Okungbowa about bringing Mytek the Mighty back to life, from dealing with colonialist attitudes in ’60s comics to what life would be like with a giant solar-powered gorilla roaming around.

We then welcome the legendary team of comedian and writer Charlie Higson, and The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard to chat about The Steel Claw – the former criminal turned secret agent Louis Crandell, whose metal hand allows him to turn invisible – from their take on British superheroes to the disappointment of the Millennium Dome!

We’re then joined by journalist Abraham Riesman to take a deep-dive into Grant Morrison and Steve Yeowell’s superbrat Zenith, examining its satire of superheroes and the comic book industry, taking the mickey out of Richard Branson and Morrison’s place as post-modernist prophet.

Simon Furman and Chris Weston join the Thrill-Cast to talk about their revival of The House of Dolmann. Created by Tom Tully and Eric Bradbury, the series featured inventor Eric Dolmann and his small army of robot puppets who fought crime!

We’re then joined by Jarrod and MJ from comics site Doomrocket to take a deep-dive into The Ballad of Halo Jones, Alan Moore and Ian Gibson’s stunning series which began as an antidote to 2000 AD‘s usual male-dominated action characters and became a fascinating, emotional journey of an ‘ordinary’ women’s attempts to escape her humdrum life.

Although Colin Wilson’s initial time at 2000 AD was brief, his work on strips such as Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper was an influential hit with readers. From Judge Dredd: The Sweet Taste of Justice in the 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special 1981 to Rogue Trooper: Marauders in Progs 282 to 289, Wilson’s style – influenced by European comics such as those by Jean “Moebius” Giraud – showcased his dystopian techno-futurism and fascinating eye for design. Going on to work on the iconic French Western series Blueberry, Wilson is unusual in having success in British, French, and American comics, including work on Star Wars and with writers such as Metz, Ed Brubaker, and Andy Diggle. Wilson joins the Thrill-Cast to delve into his fascinating career, from squatting in London to being mentored by Brian Bolland, from living and working in Provence to settling in the Australian city of Melbourne.

A frequent collaborator with writer Garth Ennis, McCrea went from running his own comic book store to working for IPC, DC, and Marvel, but the journey has not always been an easy one and he speaks candidly to the Thrill-Cast about his work, the people he has worked with, and some of the challenges he has faced. From Hitman to The Simpsons, from Middenface McNulty to Judge Dredd, McCrea discusses how his career has evolved over the past 30 years.
