Judge Dredd Megazine #473 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #473 is OUT NOW!

Next year will mark the thirtieth anniversary of the release of the Stallone Judge Dredd movie, and no doubt you’ve seen the news that Rebellion will be publishing a new edition of the official comics adaptation by Andrew Helfer and Carlos Ezquerra to mark the occasion.

Well, we’re slightly getting ahead of the celebrations with this issue’s Dredd story Lawmen of the Future by Ken Niemand and Dan Cornwell, which acts as a follow-up to Prog 2262’s Trinity, and is not short of more than a few Sly digs. It kicks off a brand-new line-up that commences inside, with the returns of Devlin Waugh, Lawless and Death Cap, plus Eartha Fargo and One-Eyed Jack McBane reunite after last year’s One-Eyed Jacks story for their very own series, courtesy of Niemand and Anna Readman, who won the Observer graphic short story competition while she was in the middle of drawing this at the tail-end of 2023.

Karl Stock chats to her about her burgeoning comics career, plus there’s interviews with Joe Currie, Anna Morozova and the creators behind the new Scream! special. All this, plus a brand-new Cadet Rico series and much more! Enjoy, citizens…

Judge Dredd Megazine #473 is out now from all good newsagents and comic book stores, plus digitally from our webshop and apps! Don’t forget that if you buy an issue of the Megazine in the first month of its release then postage in the UK is free!

OUT NOW: Judge Dredd Megazine #467

Judge Dredd Megazine #467 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #467 is OUT NOW!

One of the Megazine’s long-standing creations returns this issue – Brit-City Detective Judge Armitage is back, courtesy of Liam Johnson and Warren Pleece, in Bullets For an Old Man.

Armitage, who’s been a cranky old geezer since he first appeared back in June 1991, is now a consultant to Brit-Cit’s CID division, but Justice Department is keen to mine his experience and memories – not least CID chief, and Armitage’s former partner, Treasure Steel.

Elsewhere, there’s a complete Dredd thriller from Mike Carroll and Paul Marshall, a one-off Devlin Waugh story by Aleš Kot and PJ Holden, the last part of this arc of Harrower Squad, and the penultimate episode of DeMarco, P.I.

Karl Stock chats to former 2000 AD PR droid Igor Goldkind and Scream! editor Ian Rimmer – ahead of the release this year of the frankly glorious fortieth anniversary Archival Collection, which collects up all fifteen issues of the fondly remembered horror anthology – and Stephen Jewell gets the info on Chris Weston, Paul Cornell and Rachael Smith’s new crowdfunded books. All this and lots, lots more, citizens!

Judge Dredd Megazine #467 is out now from all good newsagents and comic book stores, plus digitally from our webshop and apps! Don’t forget that if you buy an issue of the Megazine in the first month of its release then postage in the UK is free!

ARMITAGE // BULLETS FOR AN OLD MAN

authority, even when the CID chief is now his long-suffering former partner Treasure Steel…

SCREAM // AT DEATH’S DOOR

the world’s radioactive waste, and as a consequence much of it outside the major conurbations

wilderness are heavy-weapons Judge teams like Harrower Squad…

OUT NOW: Judge Dredd Megazine #466

Judge Dredd Megazine #466 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #466 is OUT NOW!

This issue we pay tribute to two more influential comics creators that we’ve sadly lost in the last month – both Paul Neary and Enrique Badia Romero were only occasional contributors to the House of Tharg, but they were formidable figures in the history of UK funnybooks. Romero was a familiar presence in newspapers, drawing the Modesty Blaise and AXA strips, while Paul had a pivotal role at Marvel UK, overseeing a publishing house that was in the mid-eighties rivalling 2000 AD in its output with titles such as Death’s Head and Dragon’s Claws as well as nurturing future artistic stars like Liam Sharp and Doug Braithwaite.

Alongside Neary’s obituary, we also have a chapter from Karl Stock’s Comic Book Punks that covers the Marvel UK era but was cut from the book for reasons of length. It conveys a period of enormous creativity that’s generally looked upon very fondly by those that were there.

Elsewhere, there’s more blistering action in Dredd, Devlin Waugh, Harrower Squad and DeMarco, P.I. plus a complete Tale From the Black Museum from Liam Johnson and Cam Smith. Enjoy, creeps!

Judge Dredd Megazine #465 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #465 is OUT NOW!

There’s a pair of tributes this issue to the two artistic greats that we lost at the end of last year – Ian Gibson and John Burns – as creators pay their respect to these formidable talents, who contributed so much to both 2000 AD and the Meg. There’s also an obituary for influential alternative comedian Tony Allen, whose connection to the Meg wasn’t quite as sustained but nevertheless he was there right from the beginning, writing the satirical Mega-City News columns that ran in the first few issues alongside America and Young Death.

Elsewhere, as well as the latest instalments of Judge Dredd and Harrower Squad, Devlin Waugh is back for another supernatural case, with artist Steven Austin joining regular writer Aleš Kot, Laura Bailey and Rob Richardson have DeMarco, P.I. undertake a new investigation, and there’s also a new flashback tale in Mega-City 2099: Inside Man by Ken Niemand and Conor Boyle.

Meanwhile, the big news from Rebellion – which was announced just as this issue was sent to print – is that principal photography has wrapped on Duncan Jones’ animated Rogue Trooper movie, and it’s set to be released in 2025!

Who is Devlin Waugh?

He’s a charming occult investigator, worldwide celebrity, and full-time vampire, as well as one of the first openly gay characters in British comics. But what else do we need to know about Devlin Waugh?

Created in 1992 and debuting in Judge Dredd Megazine 21, Devlin Waugh was the invention of writer John Smith (Indigo Prime) and artist Sean Phillips (Criminal). Best described as a mix of Noel Coward and Arnold Schwarzenegger, he is a witty and verbose character, who tracks down rare art pieces in between dispensing justice on otherworldly and demonic foes. He enjoys both body-building and flower arranging, and is one of the most famous (and lusted-after) gay celebrities in the world.

Devlin is a part of Judge Dredd’s world, hailing from Brit-Cit, which is the name given to what remains of Great Britain following a worldwide nuclear war. Freelancing for the Vatican as an exorcist, Devlin does what he wants to do first and foremost, making him a challenging and difficult character to predict: Devlin has the mental and physical strength to overcome almost any problem he comes up against… but he won’t take on the challenge unless he wants to!

Devlin’s first story appearance was in “Swimming in Blood”, which saw him sent on a mission to an underwater prison with a vampire problem, known as Aquatraz. Whilst trying to stop the vampires who had overrun the facility he was bitten by one of the creatures, and gained vampiric abilities as a result. Although the vampirism gives him extra strength and the occasional appetite for tucking into a neck or two, it doesn’t define him as much as his powerful moustache and impeccable sense of style.

Smith, himself a gay writer who has written some of 2000 AD’s most singular stories (including Tyranny Rex and Revere) would continue to write Devlin’s adventures for years, mixing mega-violence with witty and camp entendres in equal measure. Devlin greets each new villainous threat with a raised eyebrow and tongue firmly in cheek, making him one of our most popular characters. He’s been illustrated by an all-star lineup of artists including Phillips, Steve Yeowell, Colin MacNeil and John Burns.

After a few years away from comics, Devlin returned in 2018 with the new creative team of Rory McConville (Spawn) and Mike Dowling (Unfollow) sending him off to a distinctly demonic casino in order to try and free his brother Freddy from a sinister debt. Their run was followed by writer Aleš Kot (Suicide Squad), who has been writing Devlin ever since for the Megazine.

After meeting a filth demon, Devlin would go on to inadvertently create a new friend – trapping the demon inside a dildo, he carries around the ahem, marital aid with him ever afterwards. Titivillus, who can talk and frequently chooses to, becomes Devlin’s constant travelling companion as the pair head off round the world, getting into supernatural trouble and occasionally saving the day.

You can read Devin Waugh’s adventures across four collected editions, all available through the 2000 AD webstore. Devlin’s first adventures can be found in “Swimming in Blood”, with his further Smith-written stories (including a sexually-charged meeting with Judge Dredd) collected in “Red Tide”.

Following those two, for the modern adventures of Devlin Waugh try reading “Blood Debt” and finally “The Reckoning”, which bring the character into the current era!

You can also find Devlin’s first story collected as part of Best of 2000 AD Volume 5, alongside Thrill-powered instalments of Zombo, Judge Dredd, and more!

Devlin Waugh is many things: a vampire, a freelancer, a proudly gay man, an art collector, an exorcist, and a body builder. But he’s also one of 2000 AD’s most popular characters, and his adventures remain some of the most incredibly entertaining, shocking, and inventive ever seen in comics!

OUT NOW: Judge Dredd Megazine #455

Judge Dredd Megazine #455 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #455 is OUT NOW!

New series start this issue – first up we have the much-anticipated second arc of Dreadnoughts, courtesy of regular creators Mike Carroll and John Higgins, rewinding to the early days of Justice Department in the mid twenty-first century.

Secondly, those originators of the Judge Dredd universe itself, John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, are back with Spector, a creator-owned robot-detective drama. Many of you will be aware that this was the series Carlos was working on when he sadly died in 2018, and only the first two episodes were completed (published in the 2019 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special). John decided to carry on writing the story, and Dan Cornwell will be taking over on art from part three onwards.

Also new is the Anderson, Psi-Division mini-series ‘The King of the Six Sectors’, which acts as a sequel to ‘Year One’, while both Mega-City Two and the current Devlin Waugh adventure come to a close. Elsewhere, we catch up with Devlin artist Rob Richardson, chat a life in comics with Dave Gibbons, and preview this year’s 2000 AD Free Comic Book Day special, which you’ll be able to pick up from participating stores on 5 May.

Judge Dredd Megazine #455 is out now from all good newsagents and comic book stores, plus digitally from our webshop and apps! Don’t forget that if you buy an issue of the Megazine in the first month of its release then postage in the UK is free!
