Welcome, my Thrill-hungry humanoids, to the traditional end-of- year bumper prog, where we both celebrate your planet’s festive season and also cap another scrotnig twelve months of circuit-frying amazingness. Front-loaded in this pulse-pounding prog, however, are a selection of self-contained one-off stories starring some of the Galaxy’s Greatest’s most iconic characters. Judge Dredd’s here of course (in a manner of speaking) and visited by the ghosts of his past, courtesy of Ken Niemand and Tom Foster, plus there’s new adventures for Rogue Trooper in Runaway by the Wessel and Coleby droids, Anderson, Psi-Division in The Game Within by Torunn Grobekk and Kieran McKeown, and Strontium Dog in Alpha by Rufus Hound and Dan Cornwell, a seasonal Fiends of the Eastern Front tale by the Edginton and Trevallion droids, and the latest chapter of Dan Abentt and Tazio Bettin’s Azimuth.

Phew! Quite the packed prog, I think you’ll agree, my Squaxx. Remember, Terrans, that this ghafflebette issue is on sale for three weeks, so I’ll see you all again on 3 January 2024 for more SF excitement. Have a zarjaz Christmas and New Year, humes!

JUDGE DREDD // A MATTER OF LIFE & DREDD

Mega-City One, 2145 AD. Home to over 200 million citizens, this urban hell is situated along the east coast of post-apocalyptic North America with the irradiated Cursed Earth to the west and the poisoned Black Atlantic to the east. Unemployment is rife, and crime is rampant. Tensions rest on a knife-edge and only the zero-tolerance Judges can stop total anarchy. Toughest of them all is JUDGE DREDD — he is the Law!

Script: Dan Abnett / Art: Tazio Bettin / Colours: Matt Soffe / Letters: Jim Campbell

AZIMUTH // SNOW ZONE

Welcome to the city of AZIMUTH, a data-driven metropolis, where anything is possible. Ruled by an aristocracy of the New Flesh, such concepts of life, death, and body-forms are fluid. Anyone can take any shape, if it can be conceived by the imagination. The New Flesh masters have been troubled by strange dreams and portents, which seem to have predicted the coming of a stranger — none other than Ramone Dexter…

Script: Torunn Grønbekk / Art: Kieran McKeown / Colours: Pippa Bowland / Letters: Rob Steen

ANDERSON, PSI-DIVISION // THE GAME WITHIN

Cassandra ANDERSON is Psi-Div’s top telepath, who has been responsible for saving the city on a number of occasions from supernatural threats…

Script: Ian Edginton / Art: Tiernen Trevallion / Letters: Jim Campbell

FIENDS OF THE EASTERN FRONT // SILENT KNIGHT

In 1980, the diary of German soldier Hans Schmitt was discovered in Berlin, detailing events that occurred in 1941, when he encountered the terrifying vampire Captain Constanta and his Romanian platoon. But Schmitt was not the first person to meet Constanta — the vampire has popped up throughout history, in various countries and under various guises, and in Romania he ruled over his cowed subjects…

Script: Rufus Hound / Art: Dan Cornwell / Colours: Dylan Teague / Letters: Simon Bowland

STRONTIUM DOG // ALPHA

Late 22nd century. After the Atomic Wars, many survivors were warped by the Strontium 90 fallout. These ‘mutants’ became a victimised underclass, forced into ghettos, and the only job open to them was bounty hunting. One such Search/Destroy agent, or STRONTIUM DOG, is Johnny Alpha, whose eyes emit piercing alpha waves. Partnered with his Viking buddy Wulf Sternhammer, they’re good men in a bad galaxy…

Script: Geoffrey D. Wessel / Art: Simon Coleby / Colours: F. Segala & S. Del Grosso / Letters: Rob Steen

ROGUE TROOPER // RUNAWAY

Nu Earth, site of a galactic war between the Norts and the Southers, where use of chemical weapons has rendered the atmosphere poisonous. So the Southers created the Genetic Infantrymen, bred to be immune to the planet’s lethal cocktail of pollutants — G.I.s like ROGUE TROOPER, the last of his kind. Together with biochip buddies Helm, Gunnar and Bagman, they’re searching for the traitor that sold them out…

Script: Ian Edginton / Art: D’Israeli / Letters: Simon Bowland

HELIUM // SCORCHED EARTH, Part Eleven

The far future. It has been three hundred years since the Great War ended, and eighty-five per cent of the Earth’s surface now lies beneath a gaseous ocean known as the Poison Belt — a toxic cocktail of biological weapons. The survivors live above the lethal fugue, but a Professor Bloom has emerged, claiming he can make the planet habitable again. Constable Hodge is tasked with protecting him, but they’ve been followed…

Script: Peter Milligan / Art: Rufus Dayglo / Colours: Jose Villarrubia / Letters: Jim Campbell

THE DEVIL’S RAILROAD // Part Ten

The Earth year 3038, and Planet Diaspora X-167 is a world that has been ravaged by war, a conflict that sees no sign of ending despite years of death and destruction. One couple, Palamon and Constance, are attempting to escape the caranage, especially now that Constance is pregnant — if the baby is born on Earth, it’ll have full Earth rights. Seeking a new life, these refugees must take a risky journey…

Script: Cavan Scott / Art: Luke Horsman / Letters: Simon Bowland

ENEMY EARTH // BOOK THREE, Part Three

The near future. Mother Nature has turned against the people that live upon the Earth’s surface. Now, the planet’s flora and fauna have mutated and are viciously attacking humanity. As society crumbles, and survivors seek safety, young Zoe, who has lost her own family, has rescued Jules, who’s the prime minister’s son. Now, the PM and the two youths have been shot down en route to India, crashing in the jungle…

Script: Dan Abnett / Art: Richard Elson / Letters: Jim Campbell

FERAL & FOE // BAD GODESBERG, Part Eleven

It’s been over five years since the Last-of-All-War, when the Monarchy succeeded in defeating the Malign Lord. With their leader dead, his minions are scattered, fleeing retribution from the Wretchfinders. Necromancer Bode and warrior Wrath are two such beings, and were offered a deal — hunt and kill their own kind or be declared FERAL & FOE. Now, they’ve travelled to Godesberg, a stronghold that’s in trouble…

Pre-order now: Essential Judge Anderson: Satan

ESSENTIAL JUDGE ANDERSON: SATAN

The best-selling Essential Judge Anderson series continues with a new collection collecting some of the Anderson’s most moving stories.

Following the sublime ‘Shamballa’ in volume one, Alan Grant and Arthur Ranson return with a series of stories that challenge Cassandra’s faith in the system she serves, in a city where citizens live in fear under the iron fist of the Judges’ unyielding rule. As a PSI Judge, he knows it is a flawed system and so grapples with matters of faith, choice, and damnation as she investigates a religious cult, tries to find humanity in an inhuman system – and even receives an offer of eternal life from Satan himself!

These are incredible stories, filled with intelligence and humanity, and illustrated by the superlative talent of Arthur Ranson at the very height of his powers.

Out on 8 May, this is a collection of truly essential stories for one of 2000 AD‘s greatest characters.

OUT NOW: Judge Dredd Megazine #460

Judge Dredd Megazine #460 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #460 is OUT NOW!

IMAGINE IF, IN 1982, THE POWERS-THAT-BE IN KING’S REACH TOWER DECIDED THAT BATTLE ACTION WAS TO merge with 2000 AD, much like Starlord and Tornado had done previously.

What characters would cross over into the pages of the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic, and what revamps would they undergo to fit with the anthology’s SF/fantasy remit? Well, you can see for yourself in Prog 2350, which takes that very concept and creates an alternate line-up for Tharg’s Mighty Organ – but the speculation doesn’t just stop with one title. What if, two years later, it was such a success that Battle characters were given the Dreddworld treatment in the lawman’s very own mag?

This special issue has the answer, with Dreddverse variants of Rat Pack, Johnny Red/Lofty’s One-Man Luftwaffe and Darkie’s Mob, with a couple of other characters from UK comics history thrown in. Meanwhile, in the second half of this month’s issue, we return to normal programming with the latest instalments of Spector, Dreadnoughts, Lawless, Rogue Trooper and Johnny Red. All in all, an absoutely crammed Meg – I hope you enjoy it, citizens!

Judge Dredd Megazine #460 is out now from all good newsagents and comic book stores, plus digitally from our webshop and apps! Don’t forget that if you buy an issue of the Megazine in the first month of its release then postage in the UK is free!

JUDGE DREDD // Return To Billy Carter

Mega-City One, 2106 AD. This vast urban hell on the east coast of post-apocalyptic North America is home to over 400 million citizens, with the irradiated Cursed Earth to the west and the toxic Black Atlantic to the east. Crime is rampant, and stemming the tide of chaos are the Judges. Toughest of them all is Judge Dredd – he is the Law! Now, in the wake of the Apocalypse War, Dredd’s returning to Billy Carter block, where the Dark Judges caused havoc…

Script: Karl Stock / Art: Kieran McKeown / Colours: Quinton Winter / Letters: Annie Parkhouse

RAD PACK

Following in the footsteps of other late-1970s IPC comics in going direct to the movies for inspiration, Rat Pack took its cue from Robert Aldrich’s gritty 1967 war actioner The Dirty Dozen, in which a group of US Army convicts (played by Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson and co) are enlisted for a dirty and hard-to-survive mission.

Script: Mike Carroll / Art: Staz Johnson / Colours: Gary Caldwell / Letters: Simon Bowland

STRATO SQUAD // Convoy Strike!

One of the launch series in Battle Picture Weekly, with art by the unheralded Italian illustrator Paolo Ongaro, Lofty’s One-Man Luftwaffe lasted for just four months, before aeroplane action left the comic ahead of Johnny Red’s arrival two years later. The premise was simple and effective – that downed RAF pilot and Nazi POW ‘Lofty’ Banks escapes from a concentration camp, takes on the identity of dead German air ace Major Ranke, and begins a secret war of attrition against the Luftwaffe while pretending to be a part of it.

Script: Alec Worley / Art: Patrick Goddard / Colours: Jim Boswell / Letters: Jim Campbell

ANDERSON, PSI-DIVISION // The Wolf & The Dragon

Mega-City One, 2106 AD. There are many divisions in Justice Department dedicated to the fight against crime, from Tek to Wally Squad, and for cases of a paranormal nature there is Psi-Division, its officers all gifted with psychic talents. Most powerful of the telepaths is Cassandra Anderson, who has the ability to read minds and occasionally receive flashes of future events. Sardonic and irreverent, Anderson is given more leeway as as Psi-Judge…

Script: Alex De Campi / Art: John McCrea / Colours: Mike Spicer / Letters: Jim Campbell

DARKE’S MOB

A predecessor to 2000 AD classic Bad Company, Darkie’s Mob had a brutal and uncompromising commander gathering a ramshackle group of fighters around him to fight against an even more monstrously lethal enemy, with their collective descent into the heart of darkness catalogued by a raw private along for the ride.

Script: John Wagner / Art: Dan Cornwell / Colours: Dylan Teague / Letters: Jim Campbell

SPECTOR // Incorruptible, part six

In a near-future US city, corruption within the branches of government has reached unsustainable levels. City Hall is rotten to the core, and the police force is equally on the take. To that end, Spector is created, a robot detective – beyond bribery and untainted by potential malfeasance – charged with rooting out criminal elements. But Spector is making many enemies amongst the cops, and they’re not above murder to try to get rid of him…

Script: Brian Buckley / Art: Alberto Ponticelli / Colours: Stephen Downer / Letters: Tom B. Long

ROGUE TROOPER // Part two

Nu-Earth, just another planet ravaged by a galaxy-wide war, its atmosphere poisoned by chemical weapons. Created to fight in such conditions were the G.I.s – genetically engineered infantrymen. But now only one remains, the man known as… Rogue Trooper!

Script: Garth Ennis / Art: Keith Burns / Colour: Jason Wordie / Letters: Rob Steen

JOHNNY RED // Part five

Legendary British fighter ace, Johnny ‘Red’ Redburn, returns once more as the commander of the Falcons – a Russian fighter squadron battling the Nazis in the skies over Stalingrad. But dogfighting Messerschmitts is about to become the least of his troubles when the NVKD – the notorious Soviet secret police – come calling!

Script: Dan Abnett / Art: Phil Winslade / Letters: Simon Bowland

LAWLESS // Most Wanted, part five

Colonial Marshal Metta Lawson was appointed to the frontier township of Badrock on the planet 43 Rega, intent on stamping her authority on the colony. But in doing so, Lawson made many enemies, including Munce, Inc., the mega-corporation that funded Badrock. Now, having been thrown off the force, and become a vigilante, she’s turned to organised crime, and is proving herself for Mr Fugly, the local crimelord…

Script: Mike Carroll / Art: John Higgins / Colour: Sally Hurst / Letters: Simon Bowland

DREADNOUGHTS // The March of Progress, Part six

USA, 2035 AD. The new Justice Department is still in its early years, with Judges working alongside the police. It’s proving an explosive transition, with many citizens – and uniformed cops – unhappy with these helmeted officers taking to the streets. Now a drugs cartel is striking back at the law, and Judge Veranda Glover is fleeing with a vital prisoner, whom the cartel want returned to them…

Judge Dredd Megazine #459 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #459 is OUT NOW!

We’ve got three new stories inside this issue – first off there’s a complete Judge Dredd thriller by Mike Carroll and Nicolo Assirelli; secondly, we head back over forty years to the early days of the future metropolis for another retro Mega-City 2099 tale, once again crafted by Ken Niemand and Conor Boyle; and third, we have the start of Brian Ruckley and Alberto Ponticelli’s sadly short-lived 2014 Rogue Trooper series for IDW, the only other 2000 AD ongoing featuring original material that they put out besides Dredd.

In addition to that, we have the latest instalments of Spector, Lawless, Dreadnoughts and Johnny Red, plus a trio of interviews: John Stokes discusses his wide-ranging career ahead of next month’s new Thirteenth Floor collection, Steve Sampson talks mid-nineties Psi-Judge Anderson, and writer Geoffrey D. Wessel reveals his in-roads to being published in the Galaxy’s Greatest.

Indeed, the Wessel droid will be appearing in Prog 2350, a special Battle Action crossover issue, and we’ll be seeing some of that war drama infiltrating Meg 460 as Battle characters get Dreddworld reinventions. Be here in thirty, creeps, for new twists on old favourites!

MEGA-CITY 2099 // The Thin Blue Line

Mega-City One, 2099 AD. Before the Judges took complete control of the metropolis, there were two strands of law enforcement – regular uniformed cops did much of the day-to-day policing, while the helmeted Judges were called upon to pass judgement on certain criminals, their vested powers giving them the ability to dispense on-the-spot sentences…

A ‘supreme sacrifice’ – new Judge Anderson figure set coming from Hiya Toys

A “supreme sacrifice”, a classic moment of 2000 AD history – Rebellion and HIYA Toys are pleased to announce the new 1/18 scale ‘Hall of Heroes Judge Anderson’ figure set.

Her mind a living prison for the undead superfiend Judge Death, Judge Cassandra Anderson lies entombed in a slab of the miracle plastic Boing® – one of the most iconic moments in British comics made real in the latest in the new range of 1:18 PVC action figures based on the world of Judge Dredd, from the pages of the bestselling comic British comic, 2000 AD.

Based on the original artwork by legendary artist Brian Bolland, the HIYA EXQUISITE MINI Series 1/18 Scale 4 Inch Hall of Heroes Judge Anderson is scheduled to reach stores in the first quarter of 2024.

Retailing at $24.99 (USD), this PVC set comes with 15 points of articulation, as well as a raft of accessories so you can recreate the drama and pathos of the conclusion to the ‘Judge Death Lives’ story from 1981, including a replacement hand, soul chip, a Boing® spray, a Boing® special effects accessory, and transparent coffin with eagle wreath.

Written by John Wagner and drawn by Bolland, ‘Judge Death’ from 2000 AD Progs 149-151 in 1980 is one of the most original and striking Judge Dredd stories, changing the course of the strip’s history as it introduces both Judge Anderson and Judge Death.

Anderson and Death are two of 2000 AD’s biggest characters – one a powerful irreverent psychic cop, the other an undead zombie who has declared that life itself is illegal!

After struggling to overcome Judge Death in his murderous quest to bring his twisted ‘justice’ to the people of Mega-City One, Judge Anderson realises that the only way to stop him is to psychically cage his spirit form in her mind – and then have her body encased in the breathable but impervious ‘miracle plastic’, Boing®. Her transparent tomb, bearing the legend ‘Supreme Sacrifice. Judge Anderson – A Monster Dwells Within Her’, is housed in the ‘Hall of Heroes’ in Justice Department’s Grand Hall of Justice – considered too dangerous to ever open.

The latest addition to the brand new range of fully-poseable 1/18 scale figures brings to (undead) life another classic moment from the pages of 2000 AD and will come shipped in an attractive protective cardboard window box.

OUT NOW: Judge Dredd Megazine #458

Judge Dredd Megazine #458 out now

Judge Dredd Megazine #458 is OUT NOW!

A brand-new complete Judge Dredd thriller kicks off this issue in the shape of ‘Ratings War’ by Ian Edginton and Stewart K. Moore, plus we reach the finale of the Dark Judges saga ‘Death Metal Planet’.

Elsewhere, we have the latest instalments of Spector, Lawless and Dreadnoughts, and take a peek into new title Mega-City Max, which is on sale right now and puts a YA spin on several Dreddverse characters, including Devlin Waugh, DeMarco, P.I. and Walter the Wobot, written and drawn for the most part by creators from outside the regular 2000 AD talent pool. If it proves successful, it could be developed into an ongoing monthly, bridging the audience between the all-ages Regened stories and the prog and Meg itself. Watch this space as to whether another anthology could be joining the GGC family!

In addition, there’s chats with artist Aly Fell about his latest book and the team behind new mini First Men on Mars (both crowd-funded projects, as with last month’s Bogie Man GN – increasingly the most viable route indie creators are taking), and an interview with Conor Boyle – look out for a new ‘Mega-City 2099’ episode next issue!

Judge Dredd Megazine #458 is out now from all good newsagents and comic book stores, plus digitally from our webshop and apps! Don’t forget that if you buy an issue of the Megazine in the first month of its release then postage in the UK is free!

Judge Anderson vs The Dark Judges – new HIYA Toys set coming 2024!

“Open your mind, Anderssson! You cannot resssissst usss!” – it’s the titanic encounter between Mega-City One’s top psychic cop and the undead alien superfiends from a dimension where all life is a crime – Rebellion and HIYA Toys are pleased to announce the new 1/18 scale ‘Judge Anderson vs The Dark Judges’ action figure set.

Recreating the classic moment from 1985 when the spirits of the fiendish Dark Judges rose up from the bone-strewn earth of Deadworld to possess Judge Cassandra Anderson, the HIYA EXQUISITE MINI Series 1/18 Scale 4 Inch ‘Judge Anderson vs The Dark Judges’ set is scheduled to reach stores in 2024.

This new set, based on the original comic art by artist Brett Ewins, is the latest in the brand new range of 1:18 PVC action figures based on the world of Judge Dredd, from the pages of the bestselling comic British comic, 2000 AD.

Retailing at $24.99 (USD), this PVC set comes with 15 points of articulation. The four spirit-trails of the Dark Judges are fully bendable, allowing you to pose them around the figure of Anderson on the included platform.

With her powerful psychic abilities and irreverent wit, Judge Anderson is one of 2000 AD’s biggest characters – the perfect foil for Judge Dredd since her debut in 1981 but so popular she soon broke out into her own series. Co-created by writer John Wagner and legendary artist Brian Bolland (Batman: The Killing Joke, Camelot 3000), and immortalised by actor Olivia Thirlby in the 2012 movie Dredd, Anderson brings her special power to patrolling the mean streets of Mega-City One.

Also co-created by Wagner and Bolland, The Dark Judges are Judge Dredd and Anderson’s greatest nemeses, undead zombie Judges who decided that as all crime is committed by the living therefore life itself is a crime! Although regularly foiled by Dredd and Anderson, the Dark Judges still find ways to return to finish the job of extinguishing all life!

In an episode of ‘Four Dark Judges’, written by Alan Grant & John Wagner and originally published in 1985’s 2000 AD Prog 418, Judge Death fools Judge Anderson into crossing dimensions to his home planet of Deadworld. Once there, the Dark Judges’ overcome Anderson and use her to return to Mega-City One and recommence their murderous mission!

The latest addition to the brand new range of fully-poseable 1/18 scale figures brings to (undead) life another classic moment from the pages of 2000 AD and will come shipped in an attractive protective cardboard window box.

Essential Judge Anderson: Shamballa – out now!

ESSENTIAL JUDGE ANDERSON: SHAMBALLA

“⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ … a must-read” – Comic Book News

“10/10 … just so good” – Comicon.com

“It’s called ‘Essential Judge Anderson’ for a reason” – Starburst

The best-selling Essential Judge Dredd collection expands with a new line dedicated to iconic science fiction heroine, Judge Anderson – Shamballa is out now!

Judge Cassandra Anderson of Psi Division is one of the greatest minds on the Judges’ roster. As a precognitive telepath and empath, her quirks, such as her sense of humour, are tolerated by the otherwise oppressively strict Justice Department.

However, Anderson’s sense of justice and morality soon calls her to question the Law of the Judges in these landmark adventures, written by Alan Grant and featuring jaw-dropping art by Arthur Ranson and Mick Austin. As Anderson battles to save Mega-City, psychic twins, and her friend Judge Corey from psychic attacks and their inner demons, her faith in the systems around her begins to crumble. And when the world is teetering on the brink of an apocalyptic collapse, it will take everything Anderson has to save the world at the ancient temple of Shamballa.

Grant’s run on Anderson, Psi Divison showcased a new depth for both 2000 AD and Anderson, as his stories took in the gamut of human emotion and spirituality. ‘Shamballa’is to many, the quintessential Judge Anderson story, and it serves as the perfect opening volume of Rebellion’s new Essential Judge Anderson line.

Essential Judge Anderson is available to pre-order from all good book and comic book stores, as well as 2000 AD‘s webshop!
