The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast Lockdown Tapes – Colin Wilson

Welcome to the fifteenth of The Lockdown Tapes as The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast continues to broadcast the joys of Thrill-power during the COVID-19 pandemic! Got a theme or interview you’d like to hear? Let us know at thrillcast@2000AD.com

Although Colin Wilson’s initial time at 2000 AD was brief, his work on strips such as Judge Dredd and Rogue Trooper was an influential hit with readers. From Judge Dredd: The Sweet Taste of Justice in the 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special 1981 to Rogue Trooper: Marauders in Progs 282 to 289, Wilson’s style – influenced by European comics such as those by Jean “Moebius” Giraud – showcased his dystopian techno-futurism and fascinating eye for design. Going on to work on the iconic French Western series Blueberry, Wilson is unusual in having success in British, French, and American comics, including work on Star Wars and with writers such as Metz, Ed Brubaker, and Andy Diggle. Wilson joins the Thrill-Cast to delve into his fascinating career, from squatting in London to being mentored by Brian Bolland, from living and working in Provence to settling in the Australian city of Melbourne.

Welcome to the twelfth of The Lockdown Tapes as The 2000 AD Thrill-Cast continues to broadcast the joys of Thrill-power during the COVID-19 pandemic! Got a theme or interview you’d like to hear? Let us know at thrillcast@2000AD.com

Strap on your caligae and pick up your gladius as we talk Aquila with series artist Patrick Goddard. In a career now spanning more than 20 years, Goddard has worked on strips such as Sinister Dexter, Savage, Judge Dredd, and Sniper Elite where his solid linework and eye for detail has earned him a firm place in 2000 AD‘s list of artists. We talk to him about his art on Aquila, how research has become something of a running theme for his work, and how he’s more at home as a penciller than an inker.

Comics critic and writer Tom Shapira takes a deep-dive into Judge Dredd: Brothers of the Blood, the 2006 collection which explores Dredd’s relationship with his ‘family’ of clones and his niece, Vienna. From Jungian archetypes to the Three Ages of Man, Tom and Molch-R dig down into the themes and ideas underpining this pre-Origins collection and explore how John Wagner spun a dynastic epic out of a single one-part story from 41 years ago.
